Market Research & Competitive Intelligence

Every major strategic decision should be informed by real customer and competitive intelligence — not assumptions. We provide the research infrastructure that gives your team an evidence-based foundation to make those decisions with confidence.

Why market research matters more than most companies realize

Most companies operate on a set of assumptions about their customers, their market, and their competitive position that haven't been validated in years — if ever. Leadership teams are confident about why customers buy, what they value, and how they make decisions. Then a real customer interview happens, and the room goes quiet.

The distance between assumed customer insight and actual customer insight is almost always significant. Companies that close that gap make better product decisions, communicate more effectively, price more accurately, and waste less money marketing to the wrong people with the wrong messages.

Our research practice exists to close that gap. We design and execute primary and secondary research programs that surface genuine insight — the kind that changes how your team thinks about your business, not just confirms what they already believed.

Qualitative vs. quantitative: when to use each

The best research programs integrate both methodologies. Here's how we think about each.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research — interviews, focus groups, ethnographic observation — is best for understanding why. Why do customers choose you over competitors? What language do they use to describe their problem? What almost stopped them from buying? These questions can't be answered with a survey. They require conversation, follow-up, and the ability to probe unexpected answers.

In-depth interviews typically run 45–60 minutes and cover the full decision journey. Our moderators are trained to get past rehearsed answers and capture the real motivations, anxieties, and decision criteria at play.

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research — surveys, usage data, behavioral analytics — is best for understanding how many and how often. How widespread is a particular attitude? How does satisfaction differ across segments? Is a pricing change likely to impact purchase intent? Quant gives you statistical confidence to act on insights at scale.

We design surveys with the same rigor we apply to qualitative studies — avoiding leading questions, controlling for response bias, and ensuring sample composition accurately represents the population you care about.

Frequently asked questions

How many interviews do we need for qualitative research?

For most B2B qualitative studies, 12–20 in-depth interviews with well-screened participants are sufficient to reach saturation — the point at which new interviews stop surfacing meaningfully new themes. Consumer studies often benefit from higher volumes. We'll recommend the right sample size based on your segmentation needs.

Can you research our competitors without them knowing?

Yes. Competitive intelligence research is conducted using publicly available information, mystery shopping, and secondary sources — it doesn't require competitor cooperation. We're transparent about methodology and careful not to misrepresent ourselves in any data collection.

What if our customers won't participate?

Customer participation rates are higher than most clients expect, especially for well-designed studies with a clear value exchange. For hard-to-reach populations, we use incentivized panels, professional recruits, or proxy audiences.

How is this different from what a strategy consultant would do?

Most strategy consultants rely on secondary research and internal workshops. We provide the primary research infrastructure — direct customer and market data — that makes strategic recommendations defensible. Many clients use our research to inform their own strategy work or pressure-test recommendations from other advisors.
