Richmond has a college town energy and a growing residential market. Here is how local businesses can take advantage of both.

Eastern Kentucky University brings tens of thousands of students, faculty, and staff to Richmond. That population has specific needs, specific spending habits, and a relatively short window of time in the market before they graduate and move on.
But Richmond also has a growing permanent residential population. The people buying homes off the Eastern Bypass, the families that have been in Madison County for generations, the retirees who moved to the area for the lower cost of living. These are long-term customers with very different needs and very different ways of finding businesses.
Most Richmond businesses market to one group or the other, often without realizing it. The ones that do it intentionally, tailoring their message and their channels to each audience separately, have a significant advantage over the ones that take a one-size-fits-all approach.
Students and young faculty are almost entirely digital in how they discover local businesses. They are not reading the paper. They are not looking at billboards. They are searching on their phones and trusting the reviews and recommendations they find there.
For a Richmond business that wants to reach the EKU population, the priorities are straightforward. Your Google Business Profile needs to be excellent. Your photos need to look current and appealing. Your reviews need to be numerous and positive. And your social media presence, particularly Instagram, needs to reflect a brand that looks like it belongs in their world.
The other channel that works extremely well for reaching the college population in smaller markets is local Facebook groups and community forums. EKU students and Lexington transplants who move to Richmond for school often ask for local recommendations in community groups. Being the business that shows up consistently in those recommendations, either through genuine word of mouth or through an active presence in those communities, generates real business.
The long-term Richmond resident tends to be more influenced by community reputation and word of mouth than the transient student population. These customers are making longer-term decisions. They want a plumber they can trust for ten years, not just someone to fix one problem.
For this audience, Google search and reviews still matter enormously. But community involvement, local sponsorships, and genuine relationships carry more weight than they might in a more transient market.
A Richmond business targeting permanent residents should be visible in the community in ways that go beyond digital marketing. Sponsoring youth sports teams in Madison County. Being present at local events. Being genuinely connected to the community in ways that show up both online and offline.
When someone in Richmond is trying to decide between two businesses that look roughly equivalent online, the one with deeper local roots typically wins.
Richmond sits on I-75, which is significant for certain types of businesses. Service businesses, restaurants, and retailers that can capture some of the pass-through traffic from the interstate are in a category of their own.
For these businesses, Google Maps optimization is particularly important. When someone is driving through Richmond and searches for something on their phone, what comes up in Google Maps is almost entirely determined by Google Business Profile quality and review count.
If you are a restaurant or a hotel or any kind of service business near the interstate exits in Richmond, making sure your Google Business Profile is optimized for travelers, not just local residents, is a meaningful revenue opportunity that many businesses completely ignore.
Digital marketing in Richmond operates at a lower cost than Lexington because the market is less competitive. A Google Ads campaign targeting Madison County searches will typically generate clicks at a meaningfully lower cost per click than the same keywords in Fayette County.
For most Richmond service businesses, a realistic starting budget that can generate measurable results is in the range of $1,000 to $1,500 per month in ad spend plus management. That is not a trivial investment for a small business, but the cost per lead it produces in a smaller market is often quite favorable compared to what you would see in a bigger city.
The other thing worth saying about the Richmond market specifically is that the competitive bar for digital marketing quality is lower than in larger markets. A business that does the basics well, clean website, good Google presence, active review management, and a competently run ad campaign, is likely to outperform the majority of its competitors simply by doing those things consistently.
